Hands Off Birth DVD.

This DVD, filmed in real time, shows a normal birth where the midwife assists the woman verbally without placing her hands on the perineum at all during the second stage of labour. The birth was filmed as part of staff preparation for a randomised controlled trial that examined the effects of hands on or poised in the 1990’s. Although elements of practice have altered in the last years in terms of more maternal mobility and more frequent fetal heart auscultation in the second stage, this DVD offers contemporary midwives a useful aid for discussion and reflection on practice, and could be used as part of antenatal education. Length is just over eighteen minutes.
